According to a Summerville Police Department incident report, on August 11th, 2021, at around 3:00 PM, Officers sat outside the Commerce Street Dollar General waiting for a woman suspected of financial card fraud to come outside. Haley Nicole Nichols, 25, of Rome, eventually came out of the store and was met by Investigator Brian Ozment and Lieutenant Phillip Cox. Nichols said, “She didn’t know anything about (a missing lady’s wallet reported on August 7th). She did not go anywhere (on Aug. 7th), had not possessed anyone’s financial transaction card nor attempted to use one,” according to the incident report. Ozment had seen “store video footage from George’s Kwik where she was attempting to use the stolen debit card,” according to reports. Nichols “acted as though she had no idea what [Ozment] was talking about.” Nichols eventually pulled the victim’s card out of her purse, stating, “She had no idea how that had gotten there and made a reference that people will sometimes just put things into her purse. Nichols then pulled a blue Simply Southern wallet with pink flowers on it out that matched the one that was stolen from the victim’s car.” The officers then searched Nichols’ purse, finding “a folded-up piece of plastic with a visible residue suspected to be methamphetamine. Nichols claimed to not know anything about the folded-up piece of plastic.” The officers then noticed Nichols “acting as though she was trying to slowly inch away. While her arms were crossed, she attempted to covertly reach with her left hand into her bra.” After some discussion, Nichols admitted to having methamphetamine inside her bra. Nichols was arrested and booked into the Chattooga County Jail, charged with financial transaction card theft, financial transaction card fraud, theft by receiving stolen property, and possession of methamphetamine.
