Rossville woman arrested for DUI after being stopped attempting to drive the wrong way on I-75 in Dalton

According to a Dalton Police Department incident report, On May 2nd, 2022, at 2:28 AM, Officer Black was traveling eastbound on Chattanooga Road from the Marathon gas station on Chattanooga Road. According to the report, “While traveling east, Officer Lewis advised units that a vehicle was traveling west on Chattanooga in the eastbound lane.” Officer Black reported, “Shortly after Officer Lewis advised of the vehicle, [I] noticed a vehicle on my side of the roadway with their headlights on. [I] observed the vehicle turn onto the I-75 south off-ramp, which would have the vehicle traveling in oncoming traffic. [I] activated my emergency lights and attempted to catch up to the vehicle and stop it. [I] was able to stop the vehicle before it traveled onto I-75 in oncoming traffic and kill anyone innocent.” The officer then made contact with the driver, identified as Denna Felicia Cothron, 57, of Rossville, who stated she had just gotten coffee at the gas station. According to the report, “Denna stated she did not know the area well and was following her navigation. Denna stated her navigation sent her this way.” Denna also stated she had drunk an hour prior to driving. During the HGN test, she became very uncooperative. The officer reported he could smell a faint odor of an alcoholic beverage on her breath. Denna then refused to conduct any testing after Lt. Eaton arrived and explained the situation once again. Denna was then placed under arrest for DUI. Denna then stated she was an alien. Denna also stated she is a black Mexican. Officer Black reported, “[I] then read Denna the implied consent notice from my department issued implied consent card. Denna responded, “I was in there for 10 minutes, and then yall pulled me over.” “I went in there and used the bathroom and all that stuff.” [I] advised Denna that it was a yes or no response. Denna responded with, “You figure that out for yourself.”. Denna then responded with, “Well guess what, no”.” Lt. Eaton reported he was able to smell a stronger odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from her person and noticed the more she spoke the more a slur was noticed in her speech. Denna was transported to the Whitfield County Jail, charged with DUI and failure to maintain lane. According to the report, Due to how irate Denna became at the jail, the officer was unable to explain anything else to her.
