Sugar Valley man arrested for DUI after 911 call from concerned citizen in Whitfield County

According to a Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office incident report, On October 22nd, 2022, at 5:44 PM, Deputies Figg, Fernandez, Smith, McClure, and Sgt Dalton responded to a lookout on Carbondale Road in the area of South Dug Gap Road. According to the report, “While in route, dispatch advised the vehicle was turning onto S. Dug Gap Road and was having issues driving as the tires were blown out and smoking. Dispatch further advised the vehicle was stopped on S. Dug Gap Road in the area of Engineer Floors. Deputies were able to locate the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle.” Deputy Figg reported three of the vehicle’s tires were all blown and the only wheel having any rubber on it was the right rear. The others were running on rims. Deputy Figg also observed scrap rubber marks on the roadway. Deputy Fernandez checked the trail and found evidence the driver, identified as William Lane Haley, 54, of Sugar Valley, had not been able to stay in it’s lane. During field sobriety tests, William showed several signs of impairment and was placed under arrest for DUI. Through GCIC, the tag on the 4 Runner came back with a suspended registration. William was transported to the Whitfield County Jail, where he showed a BAC of .048 on the state test. William was charged with a single-lane violation, defective equipment, suspended registration, and DUI Less safe. Due to his demeanor with him only being .004 it was suspected he might be on a depressant, as he is having depression from his divorce.
