According to a Georgia State Patrol incident report, On May 10th, 2021, at approximately 8:37 PM, Trooper Sanders responded to a single-vehicle crash on GA-157 near Porchswing Place. Trooper Sanders reported, “While en route [I] was advised that the driver fled the scene on foot. When [I] arrived on the scene, [I] spoke with Chattooga County Deputies, who stated that firefighters who arrived on the scene spoke with the driver before the driver fled the scene. The deputies also advised me there was another motorist behind the vehicle who witnessed the crash and spoke with the driver before he fled.” One of the firefighters advised the trooper that he knew the vehicle and knew the driver. According to the report, “The firefighter pulled up the Facebook of James Shropshire and advised that was the driver that fled. The witness positively identified Mr. Shropshire as the driver as well. According to the report, “The witness stated that as he was trying to crawl out of the vehicle Shropshire was asking the witness not to call 911. The witness stated Mr. Shropshire seemed to be injured and needed medical attention but picked up a shirt from the ground and walked away from the scene. The witness stated that Mr. Shropshire’s vehicle was traveling at a very high rate of speed at the time of the crash.” Shropshire returned to GCIC having a suspended driver’s license with their prior offenses. The trooper also observed a half-empty liquor bottle inside the vehicle. Warrants were issued at a later date for Shropshire. Cpl. Fielding arrested Shropshire on the warrant, which included the citations. Shropshire was charged with failure to appear-state original charge DUI, suspended license, open container, suspended license, failure to report striking fixture, failure to report an accident, driving too fast for conditions, open container of alcohol failure to maintain a single lane, expired tag, and driving with suspended/revoked license (felony) (fourth or subsequent offense). According to Chattooga County, Shropshire is currently still in custody.
