According to a Floyd County Police Department, on September 18th, 2021, at around 12:04 AM, Officer Sangphim was conducting patrol operations in the area of GA-53 at Willow Road. Officer Sangphim reported, “[I] had my patrol vehicle oriented outbound on GA-53 and was operating stationary radar in the median of the highway when [I] observed a black SUV that was traveling 80 plus mph by my visual estimation. [I] confirmed my visual estimation with my in-car radar and locked the vehicle’s speed (increased from 81 to 83 mph) at 83 mph in a 65 mph zone.” The officer pursued the vehicle in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Christopher Lee Wedgeworth, 27, of Summerville, did not brake or acknowledge the officer’s presence until he was directly behind him. Prior to Christopher braking, he swayed within his lane of travel from the fog line to the centerline. Officer Sangphim reported, “During my approach the driver, immediately lit a cigarette. This is typical behavior when a person is nervous or trying to mask the smell of illegal drugs or the odor of an alcoholic beverage. Christopher admitted to speeding, stating he was in a hurry to get to his mother’s house, who was sick. [I] observed that Christopher’s eyes were bloodshot and watery, his speech was slurred, and he had the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person. There was a passenger in the front passenger seat who identified himself as Gregory Smith. Christopher stated his license was valid, but he did not have it in his possession (later discovered that Christopher was suspended for implied consent refusal).” The officer then observed that there was an open case of beer in the back seat of the vehicle. According to the report, Christopher admitted to drinking two 12 oz beers prior to driving. Christopher was observed to be unsteady on his feet as he exited his vehicle. During field sobriety testing, Christopher showed several signs of impairment and was then placed under arrest. According to the report, While reading Christopher implied consent, he stated he did not want to hear it and would not give the officer a sample of his blood. Christopher then continued to curse at the officer and use very profane language. Christopher refused Implied Consent again. Christopher was transported to the Floyd County Jail. Officer Sangphim reported, “While [I] was processing Christopher at the jail, he stated, “If you touch me again [I] will deck you in your f***ing face”. Jail Officer Tucker witnessed the incident as well. Christopher was booked into the jail charged with reckless driving, speeding, driving on a suspended license, DUI, and terroristic threats and acts.
