Teen arrested for driving reckless after going 109 mph on Highway 27 in Chattooga County

According to a Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office incident report, on May 24th, 2021at approximately 4:18 PM, Deputy Rebecca Farmer was patrolling northbound on Highway 27 near Scenic Hill in Trion. Deputy Farmer reported, “[I] observed a tan/gray colored Mercury Marquis traveling southbound at a very high rate of speed while coming through other traffic. [I] confirmed the speed with my radar unit and locked the vehicle in at 109 mph. [I] activated my emergency equipment and advised E-911 that [I] was turning around to attempt to catch the offender and asked for nearby units to look for them coming southbound.” The deputy caught up to the vehicle at the red light on Highway 27 at Central Avenue. She conducted a traffic stop and spoke with the driver, identified as Taj Jacob Battles, 18, of Trion. Battles advised that he did not realize how fast he was going and was just in a hurry to get home. Battles was placed under arrest for speeding and reckless driving. Battles was transported to the Chattooga County Jail without incident. According to the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, “Mr. Battles is still currently incarcerated for the Superior Court Probation Violation original charge burglary.”
