Tennessee man given Narcan after overdosing and causing injury crash on I-75 in Whitfield County

According to a Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office incident report, On July 24th, 2022, at 10:11 PM, Deputy Figg along with Deputy Singleton were dispatched to I-75 northbound at the 327 in reference to a two-vehicle crash with injuries. Deputies were advised by Whitfield County Fire as they were having to breathe for Matthew Donald Corns, 34, of Smyrna, TN. According to the report, “Deputy Figg provided Narcan, which Deputy Singleton administered. Matthew was then transported to Hamilton Medical Center by Hamilton EMS.” As Deputies Figg and Singleton were conducting their investigation into the vehicle crash, they observed a small baggy containing a brown powder substance in the door handle. According to the report, “Deputy Figg requested Lt. Rann to come to the scene as the substance was suspected as heroin. Lt Rann arrived on the scene. He field tested the substance, which field tested positive for Fentenyl.” Deputies responded to Hamilton Medical Center and spoke with Matthew. Matthew agreed to the state’s implied consent and admitted the substance was heroin. According to the report, “Deputy Figg asked Matthew if he had used earlier, which Matthew stated he used before he left Marietta Ga and to driving back to Tennessee after using the heroin. Deputy Figg asked Matthew about the suspension paperwork which he had found in the vehicle. Matthew stated that it was for being served for a failure to appear for DUI drugs. Matthew stated he was on Probation and was in recovery for heroin.” He stated that he recently had relapsed and had started using again. Matthew was released from the hospital and transported to the Whitfield County Jail, charged with too fast for conditions, following too close, DUI Drugs, and possession of heroin.
