Traffic stop for hands free violation lands Rockmart man in Floyd County Jail on drug charges

According to a Floyd County Police Department incident report, on September 30th, 2021, at around 4:43 PM, Officer Sangphim was conducting patrol operations in the area of Park Ave at Booze Mountain Road. Officer Sangphim reported, “[I] observed the driver of a white Chevy Tahoe approaching the red light on Park Ave at Booze Mountain Road. The driver had his cell phone in his hand and appeared to be texting (later stated was trying to fix GPS) while driving.” The officer stopped the driver, later identified as Logan Burkhalter, 25, of Rockmart, on Old Cedartown Road at Booze Mountain Road. According to the report, the officer immediately smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and asked Logan if he had anything illegal in the vehicle. Officer Sangphim reported, “Logan’s hands were visibly shaking, and he was very nervous. Logan stated yes that he had a small bag of marijuana and a marijuana pipe.” Logan also informed the officer that he also had “Adderall” pills in his driver’s door handle area. The pills were confirmed to be scheduled two controlled substances. Officer also located a small bag containing marijuana on the passenger seat and a pipe with marijuana residue. Logan was transported to the Floyd County Jail, charged with distracted driving hands-free law, marijuana-possess less than 1 oz., drugs not in original container, and possession of a schedule II controlled substance.
