According to a Dalton Police Department incident report, On August 7th, 2022, at 9:59 PM, Officer Cruz responded to the Walmart located at 815 Shugart Road; Walmart in regards to a shoplifting in progress. The Walmart loss prevention associate advised the officer there was a male subject actively shoplifting. Officer Cruz reported, “Once inside the office [I] observed the male subject on camera later identified as Scott Michael Wish, 55, of Mountain View Road, Trion, concealing items in bags inside the shopping cart.” The Walmart loss prevention associate advised officers of the vehicle in Which Scott arrived. Officers made contact with the occupant, who was found to have no involvement or knowledge of the shoplifting. Officer Cruz reported, “[I] then observed Scott walk fast past all points of sale and head to the exit on the east side of the building. At that moment, Officer Bell and [I] made contact with Scott and placed him in handcuffs. We brought Scott back to the LP’s office, and [I] read him his Miranda rights. He stated he understood and wished to talk to us. [I] asked Scott what he was doing, and he immediately confessed to shoplifting. [I] then asked him why he was shoplifting. He stated he was doing it because of his drug addiction. Scott stated he was looking for goods he could take and trade for drugs.” The total of 30 items stolen came to a total amount of $629.95. Scott was found in possession of a counterfeit twenty-dollar bill in his left pocket. Scott was transported to the Whitfield County Jail, charged with felony shoplifting and felony forgery 2nd degree.
