Two killed after high-speed pursuit ends in multi-vehicle crash in Dalton Monday afternoon

UPDATE: According to a press release from Whitfield County Sheriff Scott Chitwood, the sheriff’s office’s Narcotics Unit requested assistance from the Tunnel Hill Police Department to stop Brown’s vehicle. Sheriff Chitwood said, “The Narcotics Unit had information that Brown was distributing methamphetamine, was a felon in possession of a handgun, and had an active felony warrant for aggravated assault out of Tennessee. Chitwood said when the Tunnel Hill officer tried to stop Brown’s vehicle, Brown took off. That officer and a sheriff’s office deputy gave pursuit. Sheriff Chitwood said the Tunnel Hill officer performed a PIT maneuver on Brown’s car. The sheriff said Brown was able to recover from the maneuver and continued to flee from the officers.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, “On July 26th, at approximately 3:00 p.m., Vehicle #1 (2002 Volkswagen Beetle) was traveling south in the right turning lane on GA3 in Whitfield County. Driver #1 was actively fleeing a marked Tunnel Hill Police Department officer. Driver #1 was driving recklessly at a high rate of speed and attempted to pass multiple vehicles between the right turn lane and right lane on GA3. Driver #1 struck four vehicles before striking the back of a tractor-trailer. This impact caused vehicle #1 to rotate counterclockwise, striking the driver-side front quarter panel of one of the previous vehicles with the passenger side rear of vehicle #1. Vehicle #1 came to an uncontrolled rest facing north between the right lane and right turning lane. Driver #1, Kaleb Marshall Brown, age 26 from Tunnel Hill, was pronounced deceased on the scene. The passenger, Christy Lawing, age 27 from Crandell, was also pronounced deceased on the scene.” According to the Georgia State Patrol, the crash report is not complete. According to a Whitfield County 911 CAD, the pursuit started southbound on Highway 41 near Hillview Road in Tunnel Hill when the officer spotted the aggravated assault suspect. The officer did conduct a PIT maneuver, but Brown continued southbound on Highway 41. The officer requested assistance from GSP as the pursuit passed GSP Dalton Post 5 entering into Dalton.
