Unlicensed driver arrested for DUI after causing crash in Dalton while high on marijuana

According to a Dalton Police Department incident report, On May 22nd, 2022, at 8:39 PM, Officer Marcus was traveling east on MLK Jr Blvd and observed a vehicle crash at MLK Jr Blvd and North Easterling Street. The officer observed a brown passenger car traveling north on North Easterling Street and enter the intersection, crashing into another passenger car. The officer made contact with the at-fault vehicle and spoke to the driver Shelby Margarita Gonzalez, 19, of Dalton, who immediately began to explain that she did not see the other vehicle. Officer Marcus reported, “[I] could detect a strong odor of marijuana coming from Shelby’s vehicle. When Shelby and her passenger, Zackary, exited the vehicle, [I] could still detect the odor coming from them. Shelby also moved and spoke at a very slow pace. [I] asked Shelby when she last smoked marijuana. She stated that she had smoked a few hours prior. Shelby acted very strange and had glossy eyes.” Officer Morang conducted field sobriety and drug recognition tests on Shelby. Officer Morang observed several signs of marijuana impairment. Officers determined that Shelby was impaired to the extent that she was unsafe to operate her vehicle. Shelby agreed to the state test and was transported to the Whitfield County Jail, charged with DUI less safe drugs, failure to yield, and driving without a valid license.
