Unlicensed driver arrested for DUI after driving reckless at speeds over 80 mph on Highway 53 in Gordon County

According to a Gordon County Sheriff’s Office incident report, On Friday, June 10th, 2022, at 12:15 hours, Deputy Shipman stopped a Dodge Ram on Rome Road (Highway 53) just inside Floyd County after observing it traveling south on Rome Rd at a high rate of speed. According to the report, “Deputy Shipman estimated the vehicle to be traveling at speeds of at least 85 miles per hour when it passed. Deputy Shipman reached speeds of up to 112 miles per hour while attempting to catch up to the vehicle.” The deputy made contact with the driver Israel Velasquez-Sanchez, 21, of Forest Park, GA, and immediately smelled the strong and distinct odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from inside the vehicle. Deputy Shipman attempted to speak to Sanchez, but he stated that he did not speak English. Deputy Shipman utilized a translator app for communicating with Sanchez. According to the report, Deputy Shipman asked Mr. Sanchez how many alcoholic beverages he had drunk, and Mr. Sanchez stated that he only drank one beer prior to driving. While speaking with Mr. Sanchez, Deputy Shipman noticed that his eyes were bloodshot and watery. Mr. Sanchez talked slowly and had trouble walking steadily when he exited.” Sanchez then showed a BAC of .110 on a PBT. Sanchez was placed under arrest for DUI and refused the state test. Sanchez was transported to the Gordon County Jail, charged with DU, open container violation, reckless driving, and driving while unlicensed.
