Unlicensed man arrested after leaving the scene of crash in Floyd County

According to a Floyd County Police Department incident report, on November 5th, 2021, at around 11:23 PM, Officer Chandler responded to back up another officer involving a crash on Maple Road. According to the report, “Lt. Pendley arrived on scene first and stated that someone in a black sweatshirt was running away from the scene.” As Officer Chandler started toward the scene of the accident, he observed someone running down Teat Street with a hood over their head. Officer Chandler reported, “[I] then initiated contact with the person who was later identified as Mr. Santos Perez Wilmer, 25, of Rome. [I] asked Mr. Wilmer why he was running in which he stated that he was trying to get home”. As Mr. Wilmer spoke, [I] smelled an alcoholic beverage coming from his person. [I] place Mr. Wilmer in handcuffs due to him not making sense to the questions [I] was asking him.” Wilmer was the owner of a red Camaro that left a lane of travel, traveling in the opposite direction, that struck another vehicle head-on. According to the report, Lt. Pendley observed a large uncapped bottle of an alcoholic beverage lying on the floorboard of the driver seat. Wilmer was placed under arrest and transported to the Floyd County Jail charged with driving while unlicensed, open container violation, hit and run; duty of driver to stop at or return to the scene of the accident.
