Walker County fugitive killed in exchange of gunfire with U.S. Marshals at Chattanooga Hotel

Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson announced this afternoon that wanted fugitive John R. Wells Jr, age 49, died in an exchange of gunfire with U.S. Marshals early this morning at a hotel on Shallowford Road in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Wells was wanted by the Walker County Sheriff’s Office on charges of Aggravated Assault, Terroristic Threats and Violation of Probation for the October 27, 2022 shooting of his wife in the Villanow Community of Walker County.

His wife was treated and released from the hospital after several days of care.

Sheriff Wilson thanked the U.S. Marshals’ Smokey Mountain Fugitive Task Force and South East Regional Fugitive Task Force for their diligence and endless efforts to locate Wells.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting.

Hamilton County, TN – On November 16, 2022 at approximately 12:41 AM, Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office Investigative Services personnel responded to the 7017 Shallowford Road at the request of Hamilton County District Attorney Coty Wamp, to investigate an officer-involved shooting involving personnel with the U.S. Marshals Service.

Once the investigation has concluded, HCSO Investigative Services will turn their findings over to the District Attorney.

The HCSO does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and, instead, refers questions of that nature to the respective agency or department to answer as it sees fit.

As this is an ongoing investigation, no further details will be released at this time.
